Facial Aesthetics in 60619

If you want to improve your appearance, working with an oral and maxillofacial surgeon may be an excellent option for you. This specialist usually has dual degrees in medicine and dentistry, and thoroughly understands the face and neck.

Facial Aesthetics in 60619

It takes 12 to 14 years of postsecondary education to achieve an oral and maxillofacial degree, according to the American College of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgeons. Graduates typically pursue a fellowship in one of four specialties: trauma repair, cancer reconstruction, cleft palate and lip surgery, and cosmetic facial surgery.

Dr. Cornell McCullom III, D.D.S., M.D., is one of only five African American oral and maxillofacial surgeons in the country with a medical degree. He specializes in facial aesthetic services to reverse signs of aging and correct facial imperfections. Patients who come to his practice, Timeless Beauty, for facial cosmetic treatment know they are working with one of the most skilled and dedicated doctors in the business.

Among the many procedures he performs in his aesthetic practice are fillers, lip reduction, NovaThreads for facial tissue lifting, Botox and Xeomin for wrinkle relaxation, chin and cheek implants and fat grafting for facial balancing, keloid scar removal, repair of torn earlobes, mole removal, neck and jowl liposuction, PRP and Vampire facelifts, and gum recontouring to correct gummy smiles.

Dr. McCollum attended Yale University for his undergraduate degree. He went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Surgery and complete his oral surgery residency at Howard University. After teaching at the University of Illinois Dental School and Northwestern Dental School, he returned to medical school at Northwestern to incorporate facial cosmetic surgery into his practice. Dr. McCullom also completed a year-long fellowship in general anesthesia at Cook County Hospital in Chicago.

He places great value on continuing education both for himself and other dentists. In fact, he often videotapes his surgeries for continuing education seminars.

Dr. McCullom is a member of numerous professional organizations and is even starting his own teaching institute in Chicago to pass along his knowledge. One of his goals when working with patients is ensuring they learn about the procedure they will undergo and its benefits.

Dr. Cornell McCullom III brings excellence to everything he does and invites you to a consultation at Timeless Beauty. For more information or to schedule an appointment, please contact our Facial Aesthetics in 60619 team.

All About Botox Alternative Xeomin | Facial Aesthetics 60619

Facial Aesthetics 60619

Xeomin (ZEE-oh-min) is a wrinkle-releaser closely related to Botox and Dysport. Our office uses it to temporarily but dramatically reduce furrows, crow’s feet, and deep forehead lines. It restores a youthful appearance to the face.

South Side Chicago Facial Cosmetics

If you have ever been told that you look mad or unhappy because of furrows between your brows, Xeomin will temporarily erase or soften those vertical lines. If forehead creases seem permanently etched on your face, or laughter creates a web of fine lines at the corners of your eyes, you can temporarily reduce their appearance with this popular injectable.

What is Xeomin?

Xeomin, like Botox, is a form of botulinum toxin type A. It is a neurotoxin used to relax muscle movement in areas that contribute to wrinkles, such as the forehead or outer corners of the eyes. It is, essentially, a highly localized muscle-relaxant. It works by temporarily deactivating the nerves that cause specific muscles to move.

When you think of a treatment with the word “toxin” in it, you might be skeptical; however, the amount is so tiny and so localized, it is considered a highly safe treatment with temporary effects.

While they share the same active ingredients, Xeomin and Botox are created by different manufacturers. Xeomin is formulated by adding an extra purification step: Basically, while Botox retains a layer of surface proteins, Xeomin does not; the protein layer has been stripped out.

Xeomin vs. Botox

These treatments offer nearly identical results, so why choose Xeomin over Botox? The lack of a protective protein coating means that our bodies are less likely to develop antibodies against the compound and negate its effects. If your skin is sensitive, or you feel like your Botox treatments are not working as well as before, Xeomin may be the best Botox alternative for you.

In blind scientific studies, neither patients nor doctors could distinguish between the final results of the two treatments. However, many patients did note that there were reduced feelings of “tightness” with Xeomin compared to Botox. Scientifically, the difference in effectiveness is 1 percent.

By manipulating targeted muscles, Xeomin can be used for other aesthetic purposes besides wrinkle relaxation. It can be used to turn up the tip of the nose or the corners of the mouth. It can correct a gummy smile and soften “pebbled” skin on the chin.

To determine whether Xeomin is right for you, you should consult with an experienced doctor. Dr. Cornell McCullom has the expertise and knowledge of facial cosmetics to make the right determination for you. Contact our South Side Chicago Facial Cosmetics office today to schedule an appointment and get started on achieving your own timeless beauty.

What is a Vampire Facelift? | Chicago Facial Aesthetics

Chicago Facial Aesthetics

A Vampire Facelift uses the restorative qualities of your own cells to rejuvenate sagging skin, reduce wrinkles and correct uneven tone. It can be used on the face, neck, hands, and décolleté.

Facial Aesthetics in 60619

This non-surgical option, also known as a platelet-rich plasma (PRP) facelift, is called a Vampire Facelift because it uses elements drawn from your blood; however, it does not require any incisions like plastic surgery. This trademarked procedure can:

  • Improve sagging skin
  • Encourage better skin tone and texture
  • Stimulate collagen production and blood flow

The Vampire Facelift can be an effective way to restore a youthful appearance to your face, making your skin appear brighter and more rejuvenated. Using only the natural platelets found in your own blood, this procedure can smooth out lines while stimulating skin regeneration and collagen formation in as little as half an hour.

What is in a Vampire Facelift?

Although your blood is mainly a liquid, it also contains solid components, including platelets. These are largely responsible for normal blood-clotting action in the case of injury, but they have a unique use for your appearance, as well.

When isolated, concentrated, and then activated, platelets release proteins and growth factors. These would normally be used to heal damaged tissue, but when injected in a specific way, they activate the skin’s multipotent stem cells. These stem cells are, in a sense, “tricked” into behaving as if there is an injury, and they get to work promoting the growth of fresh, young tissue.

How Vampire Facelift Works

We take a small amount of your blood and spin it in a centrifuge to isolate the platelets. We apply the PRP mixture to the treatment area with a small needle. The Vampire Facelift usually takes less than an hour to complete. In addition to taking less time than a surgical facelift, it is also far more economical.

One of the key benefits of the vampire facial is that your own blood is used, so there is almost no risk of rejection, infection, or allergic reaction. There may be some small amounts of swelling, redness or bruising from the tiny needles used, but these issues are resolved quickly for most patients.

If you are looking for a safe, non-surgical way to improve skin texture and tone, the Vampire Facelift may be an ideal treatment choice for you. Call our Chicago facial cosmetics office to learn more about this and other facial rejuvenation options available to you at the office of Dr. Cornell McCullom

Chicago IL Facial Aesthetics | How Small Tweaks to Your Appearance Can Yield Amazing Results

Chicago Facial Aesthetics

We are in an era when people celebrate their unique looks, but many of us still have a feature we would like to correct. Others want to turn back time. If you are seeking a more youthful appearance or want to alter a feature that bothers you, you have many options.

South Side Chicago Facial Cosmetics

How Facial Fillers Can Rejuvenate Your Appearance

Dermal (skin) fillers can help you achieve the look you want with long-lasting results. Juvéderm, Restylane, Radiesse, Belotero and others can work wonders in the hands of a skillful surgeon like Dr. Cornell McCullom. Dermal fillers can restore a youthful volume to a mature face and decrease furrow lines and smile lines. They can create a more symmetrical look, such as giving the illusion of more prominent cheekbones. Facial fillers can be used in the tear trough to plump up a hollow under-eye area, add youthful volume to the back of the hands, and subtly reshape the bridge of the nose without surgery.

Facial filler treatments take about 15 minutes to complete and the effects last about six months, depending on the strength of the filler and the area to which it is injected. Unlike surgery, downtime is minimal.

Fat Grafting for Smoother, Plumper Skin

Another alternative filler is fat harvested from your own body. The treatment, known as fat grafting, can correct a sunken appearance in the jaw, cheeks and under-eye area. The procedure involves collecting a small amount of fat from your body, purifying it, and strategically injecting it into the treatment area. Fat grafting tends to be a longer lasting option than other fillers and, because it comes from your own body, there is almost no chance of an adverse reaction.

The fat can also be combined with platelet-rich plasma (PRP) with stem cells to enhance the final results.

Achieve a Prettier Smile

Your smile is one of the first things people notice about you, and lips especially have become a focal point in our culture. There are many ways to help you achieve the perfect smile for your face.

A gum lift can reshape the gums so more of your teeth show when you smile. As a trained dentist and medical doctor, Dr. McCollum has the skill and experience to revitalize your mouth safely.

Cheiloplasty (KEE-lo-plasty) is a procedure that is used to reduce prominent lips. A minimally invasive surgical procedure done inside the lip, it is excellent for reducing the size of a lower lip that protrudes too much.

Wrinkle-Reducing Treatments

Botox, Xeomin and other botulinum toxin injectables temporarily reduce the appearance of frown lines between the brows, crow’s feet at the corners of the eyes, forehead furrows and other expression lines. They are neuromuscular blockers, which, in very tiny and safe amounts, temporarily deactivate specific muscles. They can help restore a youthful appearance or can be used proactively to prevent the formation of deep lines. The effect can last for months and there is almost no downtime for most people.

Dr. McCollum offers these and many more facial treatments from removal of skin tags, keloid scars and moles to chemical peels and Vampire (PRP) facial rejuvenation. Make an appointment for a consultation today with our Chicago IL Facial Aesthetics.

The Benefits of a Non-Surgical Nose Job | 60619 Facial Aesthetics

The Benefits of a Non-Surgical Nose Job

Are you looking for a youthful, natural appearance? Fat grafting is considered safe, permanent, and natural. It can be combined with fillers or used on its own to help create a more youthful contour to the face. It is also used to plump out depressions in the skin, such as acne scars. However, like any cosmetic procedure, it may not be right for everyone.

What is Fat Grafting?

As we age, our face loses fat and volume around the eyes and cheeks. As the face loses that volume, wrinkles and lines can become more prominent, the eyes can look sunken, and the cheek area less defined. Fat grafting gives us the ability to remove excess fat deposits from other areas of the body and gently place it in the areas of depleted volume. This can be a subtle way to restore a more youthful appearance.

How Does it Work?

Once fat is collected, it is purified and carefully placed in the target area. The result is a natural look that typically lasts longer than dermal fillers because there is nothing to break down the fat cells. Because it comes from one’s body, there is no risk of rejection. That is what makes it a natural choice for many people.

Fat cells, like every cell in our bodies, contain stem cells, leading some to believe the fat graft has an anti-aging effect. There is no scientific evidence to back this up; however, in our experience, fat grafting can work well when combined with platelet-rich plasma, or PRP. This process uses a concentration of regenerative cells derived from one’s own blood plasma.

Recovery from fat transfer with or without PRP is minimal and can last up to a week. Cold compresses can alleviate any swelling that occurs.

Is Fat Grafting Right for Me?

Everybody’s skin is unique. Sometimes transferred fat can be absorbed, so it is common to inject more than needed. If, however, it does not break down, it may take on a lumpy appearance. A skilled provider can minimize this risk, but the process is simply not predictable. As with any filler, it is possible for the fat to spread to unintended areas.

Every cosmetic procedure has its benefits and inherent risks. We would be delighted to evaluate your face and make a prudent, honest recommendation on fat grafting and other procedures. Call Chicago Facial Aesthetics today for an appointment.

Facial Aesthetics in Chicago | Is Facial Fat Grafting Right for You?

Is Facial Fat Grafting Right for You?

Today, it is easier than ever to improve your appearance without a permanent commitment. If you’re not satisfied with the shape of your nose but don’t want to go under the knife, look into a non-surgical nose job.

Dr. McCollum’s skill with injectable fillers can give you the look you have always wanted, creating what is commonly known as a “liquid” nose job.

Traditionally, rhinoplasty (nose job surgery) requires anesthesia and weeks of healing time. The changes to the nose are permanent. If you are unhappy with the results, you must live with it or undergo revision surgery.

How Long Does a Liquid Nose Job Last?

A liquid nose job, or non-surgical rhinoplasty, uses fillers, Botox, or both to alter the shape of the nose. Unlike a surgical procedure, the results are enduring yet temporary, lasting many months. This is a positive if you decide the results are not what you envisioned.

What Does the Non-Surgical Nose Job Procedure Look Like?

Before the procedure, the treatment area is numbed with cold packs or topical anesthesia. A small needle delivers fillers mixed with an anesthetic to select parts of the nose. Botox may also be injected to temporarily limit the movement of specific muscles to alter the appearance of the nose. With the use of anesthetics, most people feel only a slight pinch or stinging sensation, but it is over quickly.

Like most injectable facial treatments, the entire process usually takes less than an hour to perform. Once the treatment is completed, recovery is usually quick. Bruising at the injection site is possible, but it dissipates in a few days. Compare that with weeks of downtime for traditional nose surgery.

Who is a Good Candidate for a Non-Surgical Nose Job?

For the right candidate, a non-surgical nose job can address issues like a crooked nose or a prominent bump. It can widen the bridge of a narrow nose by adding fillers on either side. In experienced hands like Dr. McCollum’s, the results are a subtle shaping that creates a greater harmony of facial features.

Not all people and not all issues can be improved with this non-surgical option. Liquid rhinoplasty cannot be used to slim the width of the base of the nose or narrow the nasal tip. Botox can temporarily limit the flaring of nostrils but not actually alter their shape.  The procedure also can’t bring the top of the nose closer to the face.

If you have had rhinoplasty and are unhappy with the results, fillers can help improve the look of your nose.

Are There Risks with Non-Surgical Nose Jobs?

While there are risks involved with any procedure, the non-surgical option has limited chance of complications, such as filler migration. In fact, this is considered one of the safest procedures you can have done.

If you’d like to learn more or want to see if non-surgical rhinoplasty may be an option for you, please contact our 60619 Facial Aesthetics office. We look forward to hearing from you.

Facial Aesthetics in Chicago | Tips for Healthy, Glowing Skin

facial aesthetics in chicago

If you are the type of person who likes to stay active outside no matter what time of year, you want your skin to reflect your lifestyle: healthy and vibrant. It is possible with preparation, protection, and perfecting your skin care routine.

Best Ways to Protect Your Skin

If you love the outdoors, it is essential to make sure your skin is protected from the sun’s harsh UVA and UVB rays. That applies whether you are on a beach in the summer or on the ski slopes in the winter. Radiation not only damages your skin on a cellular level; it is a top cause of premature aging. To prevent this, you need to wear a broad-spectrum sunscreen anytime you go outside, even for short periods.

The best sunblock won’t do its job if it is expired and used improperly. First, check the expiration date on that bottle of sunblock that has been sitting in your bathroom cabinet for who-knows-how-long, and replace it if necessary. Be sure to reapply it every two hours in the sun and after activities like swimming. It’s easy to forget to reapply, so set a timer on your phone if you need a reminder.

Some people hate the feel of greasy sunscreen on their face, which deters them from reapplying or applying at all. Fortunately, there are many formulations on the market to accommodate every preference: sensitive skin sunblock, non-greasy formulas, as well as a variety of creams, oils, and sprays.

Don’t forget to protect your lips; they are often forgotten when it comes to sunscreen and as a result are a common skin cancer site. Protect them with a balm or gloss that contains a high SPF, and remember to reapply often.

Remove Dead Skin

No matter what time of year, exfoliation is an important part of skincare. Our skin is constantly shedding surface cells. If these are not removed, they accumulate and make the skin tone look dull. Some people also have issues with clogged pores; others have itchiness and flakiness from dead skin, as well. A gentle exfoliation a few times a week will help resolve these issues and keep your skin looking bright and healthy.

Moisturize Your Skin Daily

Use a moisturizer attuned to your skin type and the time of year. Creams and butters can prevent chapped skin in harsh winter winds. In summer, look for a light, refreshing moisturizer. Gels and lotions are the lightest forms and will absorb quickly into the skin. Apply your daily moisturizer after the shower for quickest absorption.

Get a Sunkissed Glow Without the Sun

If you are light-skinned and seek a warm glow, don’t look to the sun or a tanning bed. The American Academy of Dermatology warns against tanning beds in particular, saying a single session can increase the risk of melanoma by 20 percent, basal cell carcinoma by 29 percent, and squamous cell carcinoma by 67 percent. If you’re fair-skinned, it is best to stick to a bronzer or experiment with an FDA-approved self-tanner, if you’re not allergic.

If you are Black or dark-skinned, it is still important to wear sun protection to guard against skin cancer. Limiting exposure to the sun, caring for your skin, and taking precautions are easy ways for all of us to achieve glowing skin safely. Chicago Facial Aesthetics | Say Good-Bye to Keloids

Chicago Facial Aesthetics

Our bodies have a robust system for recovering from injury. However, when too much scar tissue grows back, it leads to the development of a growth called a keloid. Keloids are not harmful to your health, but they can have cosmetic concerns. Dr. Cornell McCullom and the team at Timeless Beauty have successfully removed keloids, giving you your confidence back.

What Is A Keloid?

Keloids, according to the American Academy of Dermatology, are scar tissue that healed properly over an original wound, then kept healing and growing. Over time, this tissue grows smooth and hard, resulting in a large growth that has the potential to be much larger than the original wound.

Keloids are most commonly found on the earlobes, cheeks, shoulders, and chest. They can develop over a period of weeks and months, and have mostly benign symptoms like:

  • Coloring the skin different from its normal hue, namely pink or red
  • Raising up to become a lumpy or ridged area of skin
  • Continuing to grow larger as more and more scar tissue accumulates
  • Growing itchy and tender

Since they’re made of scar tissue, keloids do not have a risk of growing cancerous like similar blemishes do. The main problems caused by keloids are cosmetic. They can make you feel self-conscious if they’re large or in a highly visible location like the face.

Who Is At Risk For Keloids?

About ten percent of people run the risk of getting keloids, with rates being higher in people of Asian and Latino descent. Every kind of injury to the skin carries a slight risk of a keloid scar forming, including:

  • Acne scarring
  • Burns
  • Chickenpox scarring
  • Getting your ears pierced
  • Deep scratches
  • Surgical incision sites
  • Vaccination sites
  • Tattoos

How Can Keloids Be Treated?

There are at-home treatments you can consider if keloids are small or relatively recent. Keloids tend to shrink and become flatter over time without treatment, and can sometimes vanish on their own. Moisturizing oils can help keep skin soft and aid in the reduction of the growth.

However, for very large or older keloids, surgical removal by a professional is recommended. Most cosmetic treatments for keloids involve the use of lasers to resurface the skin and smooth out where the scar used to be. Dr. Cornell McCullom has developed a unique technique for removing large keloids that leaves little scarring and can bolster your confidence.

Keloids can be a serious cosmetic concern for those who are prone to them. However, we at Timeless Beauty are experienced in their treatment and removal. If you have a keloid that refuses to respond to home treatment or seems to be growing larger with time, contact us today to schedule an appointment.

Facial Aesthetics Chicago | Treating Sun Damage To Your Skin

Sunlight has many benefits to our overall well-being. The UV rays help our skin produce vitamin D, which is a necessary component of normal bone function and health. However, an excessive amount of sunlight during the day can have many short-term and long-term effects on your body. Thankfully, the experienced team at Timeless Beauty has years of experience treating skin damage caused by sunlight. We have an array of treatments available to restore your skin’s health and vitality.

How Does Sunlight Damage Skin?

Human skin is made up of three layers: the epidermis, dermis, and fat. The epidermis is the outer layer that covers our body and is responsible for protecting it from the sun’s rays. When exposed to UV rays, the cells in the lower part of the epidermis push upward to thicken the surface.

These cells produce a darker color, which you may be more familiar with as a tan. Some people’s skin cells do not produce the darker color and instead become inflamed, which is widely recognized as a sunburn. Tans and sunburns alike cause damage to the skin, with consequences including:

  • Freckles and moles that can become cancerous
  • Less elastic skin
  • Thickened or leathery skin
  • Wrinkles and lines
  • Dark spots
  • Skin cancers

How Can You Protect Your Skin?

Sunscreen is the most valuable tool available to protect the skin from sun damage. Higher sun protection factors (SPF) prevent more of the sun’s rays from reaching your skin.

The American Academy of Dermatology Association recommends wearing long clothes and a hat to physically block the sunlight. Apply sunscreen to all areas that your clothing won’t cover, and seek shade if you’re outside around midday. The sun’s rays are strongest at this time of day.

How Can You Treat Sun Damage?

Sunburns have an average recovery time of a few days, but can take up to two weeks to heal if they are severe enough. The long-term effects of sun damage may not appear for months or even years. However, if you find yourself with wrinkles, lines, moles and leathery skin as a result of sun damage, Timeless Beauty has several solutions available to you:

  • Botox – A botox injection will block nerve signals beneath the skin. This can relax the muscles of the face and smooth out wrinkles and lines.
  • Chemical peel – Chemical peels can improve the appearance of dark spots and sun damage to the skin. Deep peels can even remove precancerous growths in the lower layers of the skin.
  • Mole removal – There are many techniques for removing moles, and doing so can prevent them from potentially becoming cancerous.

The sun’s rays can have a variety of effects on our skin, many of them damaging. Our team at Timeless Beauty are experienced in treating skin damage. If you would like help reversing dermal damage from the sun, contact us to schedule a consultation today.

Chicago IL Facial Aesthetics | Boost Your Confidence With Professional Botox Treatments

Chicago facial aesthetics

Botox has become synonymous with enhancing beauty and personal confidence these days. From helping those with lower self-esteem feel better about their physical appearance, to keeping someone looking as young as they feel inside, Botox is one of the most popular nonsurgical procedures around.

Originally used strictly for medical purposes, Botox today is being used as a form of treatment for a variety of different reasons and conditions. The most commonly known use for Botox is in aesthetic procedures. Improving physical appearance and boosting confidence has always been at the forefront of motivations for those considering Botox. A great solution for reducing wrinkles, softening hard lines and easing scarring, Botox has been helping individuals, both male and female, feel more confident in their own skin for years.

But helping lift lips and soften jawlines is just the tip of the iceberg. Botox research has also supported a whole host of other concerns that Botox may be able to provide help with. Botox has been used recently as one possible treatment for severe migraine issues, which in some cases can be detrimental to the quality of life for patients. Botox can help create more pain free days and an increased sense of confidence for some. In addition to migraines, Botox has also been thought to potentially help conditions such as depression and anxiety by allowing individuals to regain confidence in themselves.

Whether you’re looking to reduce the effects of aging, or find another Botox solution, our team can help. While we believe that all faces are beautiful, we understand that you may want to enhance your natural features for an even more radiant appearance. Whatever you need to help you feel confident in your own skin we can help with. Take charge of each day and  see how Botox could potentially help improve your life.
