Facial Aesthetics in Chicago IL | The Many Uses of Botox

When most people think of Botox, they think of cosmetics and treating fine lines and wrinkles on the face. While Botox has made quite a name for itself in the cosmetic industry, it was originally used for medical purposes. A resurgence of these uses has increased interest in using Botox for uses other than strictly cosmetic. Some patients who have exhausted other options for treatment for certain disorders find Botox to be a viable form of treatment for them. Learn about the many uses of Botox and how it can benefit you.

What is Botox?

Botox or Botulinum toxin, is a neurotoxic protein produced by the bacterium Clostridium botulinum and other related species. Through injections in small doses, it prevents the release of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine from axon endings at neuromuscular junctions and causes temporary flaccid paralysis. Botox comes in two forms (A and B) that are used for different treatments.

What Other Uses Does Botox Have?

While the cosmetic side of Botox is what many of us may first consider, the drug also has real world medical applications that help people lead happier and more comfortable lives. Some other uses for Botox include the treatment of:

  • Chronic migraines
  • Excessive underarm sweating
  • Overactive bladder
  • Crossed-eyes

Botox has been used in some cases to help with the symptoms of depression as well. With routinely conducted procedures, patients can see a prolonged effect on all of the previous conditions as a result of Botox injections.

Hopefully the next time you think about Botox, you’ll consider the large numbers of individuals these treatments have been able to help. If you want to experience some of the beneficial effects Botox can have on your own physical appearance, contact our office and schedule an appointment today. Chicago Facial Aesthetics | Your Botox Questions Answered

There are two schools of thought when it comes to Botox. On one side are those who are cautious and maybe even a little confused. On the other, are millions of people who swear by the treatment. Is it right for you? We’ll explain everything you need to know and let you decide for yourself.

What does Botox do?

The highly purified toxin temporarily erases or reduces frown lines, crow’s feet, and forehead lines, among a long laundry list of other uses.

Will Botox make me look frozen or cartoonish?

When administered correctly, Botox has amazing effects, restoring youth to your facial features. It’s only when too much is injected in the wrong spots that the frozen look appears. As with any surgical procedure, it’s important to be treated by an experienced professional. Luckily, we are.

Does Botox have side effects?

The possible side effects are extremely limited and short-lived. 1-5% of cases can have mild droopiness in the eyelids, which usually goes away within a few weeks. Some patients experience slight bruising.

Does Botox hurt?

Botox is no more or less painful than other similar injections. Some professionals offer topical anesthesia or use ice to numb the area for your comfort.

How long does Botox Last?

Results will vary from patient to patient, but you can typically expect a range of three and a half to four months.

How do I schedule an appointment?

If you’re interested in Botox treatment, call our office and schedule an appointment with Dr. McCullom today. Our team will answer any additional questions you have, and design a treatment plan to help accomplish your goals.

We look forward to helping restore your confidence.

Chicago Facial Aesthetics | Motion Creates Emotion: How Botox Might Treat Anxiety and Depression

Facial Aesthetics Chicago

There is something known in science as the ‘facial feedback hypothesis’. First conceived by Charles Darwin, it suggests that something as simple as our facial expressions can impact the way we feel. For example, there’s an idea that if you made yourself smile, your brain would interpret that as something associated with being happy, and therefore make you feel happier. Try it for yourself right now. Did you notice even a subtle change?

While interesting in and of itself, this idea may not seem to have much to do with Botox and cosmetic surgery. But recently, some leading experts are starting to suggest that Botox could have a similar impact on your mood.

We all know how Botox can help restore your physical appearance by softening wrinkles. The confidence you gain from this could be enough to make most of us feel better about ourselves, and maybe even happier. When you stop worrying about your appearance and feel more confident in your own skin, it naturally translates into an overall better mood. We like to feel beautiful and confident. Botox helps us achieve this.

The Journal of Psychiatric Research has published several studies which conclude that botox is a viable way to treat depression. Perceived physical improvement can cause changes in neurology, meaning that Botox treatments make people feel better. According to one study, over half of depressed subjects had major mood improvements after using Botox to smooth wrinkles and relax their facial muscles.

Regardless of your feelings about Botox, it’s clear that your face can play a huge part in dictating your mindset. As always, it’s best to consult with your doctor before beginning any treatment. Schedule your next appointment with our office today to discuss all the potential benefits of Botox treatments.

Facial Aesthetics in Chicago | The Undeserved Bad Reputation of Botox

Chicago IL Facial Aesthetics

Botox. Even the word itself can bring images of caricature faced celebrities to mind. “They’ve had some work done,” you scoff. But if this bad reputation is keeping you from trying Botox for yourself, it shouldn’t be. While Botox comes with its fair share of potential side effects, the majority of these are significantly worsened by the unqualified nature of your provider. So how can you make sure that your doctor has the skills and experience necessary to work on you?

Spotting Red Flags

When trying to choose the right doctor it’s all about priorities. You should be looking for skill, experience, and credentials. This is not the time to bargain shop. Stick to someone with the proper training, credentials and skill that you know you can trust. There’s more artistic talent required in creating a natural look with Botox than most may have considered. Make sure your doctor has both the scientific understanding as well as the artistic vision to ensure you achieve naturally beautiful results.

Additionally, both you and your doctor should have reasonable expectations. Botox isn’t for everyone, and the right doctor may try to dissuade you if there is a better treatment available. When it comes to this treatment, less is more and your doctor should be there to help you manage your expectations about what Botox can achieve. It’s important to remember that Botox is used to relax and smooth lines, not completely erase.

Next on our list of red flags are the “super sales” of Botox. If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is. A heavy discount could very well be a sign that the office doesn’t perform the procedure very often and is trying to move its expiring product off the shelves. That means a lack of experience and a low quality product.

If the stress of your appearance is causing your wrinkles to deepen faster, don’t let the bad reputation of Botox convince you there are no solutions. Contact our office today and see if Botox could be the treatment you’ve been needing.

Facial Aesthetics Near Me | Four Surprising Uses for Botox Injections

In its traditional use, most people know of Botox as a treatment used to reduce wrinkles in an effort to make patients look younger. What many don’t know is that Botox has a whole list of other beneficial uses too, some of which may just surprise you.

Hyperhidrosis (Excessive Sweating)

Hyperhidrosis, or excessive sweating, can be extremely uncomfortable for patients both physically and mentally. Often, patients don’t realize that there could be a solution. Even fewer know that Botox could be one possible option. If prescription antiperspirants or oral medications don’t work, Botox injections could significantly reduce the amount of sweat you produce. While injections under the arms could be what first come to mind, other areas are able to be treated as well. Your palms, soles, and scalp can all be helped with Botox. Results from this form of treatment usually last anywhere from four to six months.

Those of us who have experienced migraines in the past understand how debilitating they can be. Mayo Clinic has used Botox since 2002 as a way to safely and effectively reduce migraines in patients with severe cases. Results can last as long as 3 months, but vary per person. It is worth noting that the points of injection are similar to the ones used to reduce the appearance of facial wrinkles.

It seems like every day another breakthrough acne solution sponsored by a celebrity is offered to acne-sufferers. Possibly soon to be added to the growing list is Botox. Several studies have shown that when injected into active acne lesions, Botox can decrease oil production and lead to less acne.

TMJ (temporomandibular joint disorder) can also be treated through the magic of Botox. Used to help relax the jaw and facial muscles, Botox can help ease jaw pain that results from grinding and clenching.

If you have any questions on whether Botox may be right for you, don’t hesitate to contact our office. We look forward to speaking with you!

Chicago Facial Aesthetics | Post-Treatment Tips for Your Facial Rejuvenation

Dr. Cornell McCullom‘s facial rejuvenation can restore your youthful appearance by gently correcting most of the active wrinkles on your face. Safe, effective, and quick-acting, our procedures will bring you the confidence you deserve. Here are a few tips on how to make the most of your rejuvenation immediately after treatment.

Botox© and Dysport©

When it comes to Botox and Dysport, there are a few important tips to keep in mind. Try exercising your treated facial muscles for an hour by smiling, frowning, or squinting to help the product set in. Avoid lying down flat for the first four hours, or doing any strenuous activity for the first six. If you’ve got a facial or spa-day scheduled, postpone it for a day to minimize bruising. Your neuromodulators can take up to a week to take effect, so be patient.

Dermal Fillers

After receiving dermal fillers, it is common to experience mild tenderness, stinging, bruising, or swelling. Don’t worry – these are temporary and can be minimized with a cool compress as well as avoiding pressure or direct contact. Avoid aspirin, ibuprofen, alcohol, or salty foods for 12 hours, and strenuous activity for at least a full day.

Kybella can be a powerful way to reduce fullness in your chin and neck area. After your treatment, you might experience redness, swelling, or bruising. For relief, surround an ice pack with a cloth and ice the treatment area for no longer than 15 minutes at a time. Avoid strenuous exercise for the first few days following your injections. You can also prevent swelling overnight by sleeping with your head elevated.

With the help of our caring doctor, your rejuvenation experience can bring you confidence in your appearance and restore years of aging. By following our guidance, you can recover with ease and comfort while you enjoy the effects of your procedure. Contact our office if you have any questions on post-treatment or to schedule a consultation.

Chicago Facial Aesthetics | Tips to Make your Botox & Dermal Fillers Last Longer

You’ve invested in your skin by getting Botox and/or dermal fillers. Now you want to make sure you get the maximum effects and optimize results. Here are some tips to help your results last:

Sun Protection

Overexposure to UV rays from the sun or tanning beds can actually reverse the benefits of your treatments. This is why Dr. McCullom encourages all patients to use sun protection, especially following these injectables. At Timeless Beauty, we recommend our patients use a high quality, broad-spectrum sunscreen. Do your best to avoid being outdoors during peak UV hours, and wear a wide-brimmed hat for added precaution.

While exercise is extremely beneficial to the body in a number of ways, avid gym-goers may experience somewhat shorter result timelines. What’s best is not to cancel the gym membership, but to be conscientious and make efforts to avoid squinting or scowling during exercise routines and throughout the day. An easy modification is to wear a hat and sunglasses when outside to reduce your urge to squint.

Eat Right

It’s no secret that the foods we eat can affect our skin (ask any teenager). Following dermal fillers, it’s best to avoid processed and packaged foods, and limit your sugar intake. These foods can cause inflammation which impacts your overall skin health.

Reduce Stress

Easier said than done, as stress is simply a part of daily life. But high levels of stress can release cortisol and other hormones that actually accelerate the aging process, and can quickly translate into unwanted signs of aging manifesting themselves in your skin.

Try to reduce unnecessary stressors, and incorporate stress relief techniques into your day.  Enjoy a candle-lit bubble bath, sit on your deck and read a book after dinner, or enjoy quiet meditation and yoga.

Increase Zinc

Some studies have shown that the effects of Botox are linked to zinc levels in the blood. And, many people tend to have a slight zinc deficiency anyway. Taking a zinc supplement following your Botox or dermal filler treatment may help extend the anti-aging results.

Hands-down, the best way to extend the results of your Botox or dermal filler results is to continue with regular ‘maintenance’ treatments before the results wear off. By undergoing regular treatments of Botox, the targeted muscles may actually become trained to better respond to the neurotoxin, offering extended results.

If you’re ready for your next Botox maintenance treatment, or are interested in one of our many facial esthetics services, please contact Timeless Beauty in Chicago.

Chicago IL Facial Aesthetics | Botox vs. Fillers: Which is Right For You?

Botox and fillers are two similar cosmetic options used to improve the look and volume of the face. They are alike in many ways, as both are minimally invasive and don’t involve surgery. However, while they may seem identical, both Botox and fillers have a number of differences that make them ideal for specific procedures. If you’re considering cosmetic treatments, it’s important to know which of the two approaches is ideal for your needs.

What Is Botox?

Botox is a widely used cosmetic procedure, derived from a toxin called botulinum. It works by being injected in small amounts into a muscle. It settles on nerves inside the treated area, blocking the signals traveling through. Those interruptions cause the affected muscle to go into a state of temporary paralysis, softening and removing wrinkles in the area.

Botox is normally used in the face to treat dynamic wrinkles. It’s not a permanent treatment, with the effects lasting for a few months at a time before needing a re-application. Millions of Botox procedures are performed every year, resulting in happy, confident patients.

What Are Fillers?

Dermal fillers are also known as soft tissue fillers. Rather than being injected into a muscle to block nerve signals, fillers are used to add volume and fullness to the surface of the skin. This helps alleviate signs of aging. Dermal fillers are made of a wide variety of substances including:

  • Calcium hydroxylapatite, a mineral compound found in bone
  • Hyaluronic acid, found in bodily fluids and used to add plumpness to the skin
  • Polyalkylimide, a transparent gel
  • Polylactic acid, which stimulates the production of collagen
  • Polymethyl-methacrylate microspheres, a semi-permanent filler

Fillers are made to last for years, much longer than Botox. They are used to treat a wider variety of aging issues than Botox alone. Dermal fillers can plump up thinning lips, raise shallow areas of the face, and fill in recessed scars.

Which One Is Right For Me?

The decision between Botox and dermal fillers ultimately comes down to what you want to accomplish with your cosmetic procedure. Both are suited for different purposes.

If you want to stop creases and wrinkles caused by facial expressions, go with Botox. The treatment needs to be applied every few months, but the resulting smoothness to your face is worth it. If you’re looking instead for added fullness and volume to your lips and face, go with dermal fillers. In fact, both Botox and fillers can be combined in one treatment for dramatic changes.

Despite appearing the same, there are a number of differences between Botox and dermal fillers. They each have their own strengths, and can work together to give you the look you’ve dreamed of. If you think Botox, dermal fillers, or a combination thereof can get you the results you want, contact us today for a consultation.

Chicago IL Facial Aesthetics | Facts About Chemical Peels

A chemical peel is a skin-resurfacing procedure in which a mild acidic solution is applied to the face or another area of the skin to remove the top layers. This allows new, smoother, healthier skin to grow back in its place. At Timeless Beauty, we use chemical peels to treat wrinkles, discoloration, scars, and more.

What Are the Benefits To A Chemical Peel?

Sometimes, skin irregularities need more exfoliation to treat than a topical cream can provide. Chemical peels are a nonsurgical, less invasive way to improve your appearance. By using slightly acidic substances to remove damaged and dead cells, the skin that grows back will appear smoother, firmer, and healthier.

Chemical peels can help address a number of skin conditions. These include:

  • Acne
  • Enlarged Pores
  • Scarring
  • Redness
  • Rosacea
  • Hyperpigmentation

What Are the Types of Chemical Peels?

The three different types of chemical peels are distinguished by how deep the removal of skin cells is. There are three kinds, each with distinct attributes:

  • Light – Also known as a superficial or “lunchtime” peel, this treatment only affects the outermost layer of the skin. It is mostly used as a refresher, applied every few weeks to rejuvenate the face, neck, chest, or hands. The acid used is very mild, and the treated areas will heal within a few days.
  • Medium – Medium chemical peels penetrate more layers of skin, and as such are used for more permanent results. They are ideal to smooth out wrinkles, get rid of acne scars, and repair hyperpigmentation. The trade-off is that it can take up to two weeks to heal fully from the treatment.
  • Deep – These treatments are the most coarse, and are reserved for patients with the most damage. Deep peels are reserved for deep-set wrinkles, scars, or even precancerous growths. Due to their intensity, only one is needed for the full effect. The recovery period for this procedure is longer, but the results are dramatic.

What Can I Expect During A Chemical Peel?

All three types of chemical peel have the same basic process, with some slight differences depending on the intensity. Anesthesia is not normally used during the treatment, although it may be considered.

We will begin by thoroughly cleaning your face and covering your eyes with goggles to protect them. Afterwards, a brush is used to apply the chemical solution to the area being treated. You may feel a mild stinging sensation while the acids do their work. Then, the area is washed with water and a saline compress is applied to act as a neutralizer.

After the procedure, you will experience red, tender skin as the treated area heals. Limit sun exposure as much as possible, and wear sunscreen on the treated area to protect it. Most of the time, you will heal fully within a few days, but some patients take longer. Our team will provide you with full aftercare instructions.

Chemical peels are a safe, proven, effective way to exfoliate and rejuvenate. At Timeless Beauty, we can use them to help your skin look and feel better. If you have questions about chemical peels or think they may help you get the results you want, contact us today to schedule a consultation.
